   Most of the stuff at office supply places (and even stores like Pottery Barn and West Elm) is particle board and veneer. If he has a good budget, I would suggest going to moderate to high-end furniture stores like Henredon, Ethan Allen, Drexel and Arhaus, all of which now have lines of well-crafted solid wood office furniture. Or, for the really deluxe stuff, find a Herman Miller or Steelcase dealer.

   And for real bang for the buck, see if there is a used office furniture reseller in your area. With businesses cutting back and going out of business there are bound to be deals on gently used quality pieces. In fact, I got my $ 600 Herman Miller office desk chair from a used office furnishings dealer for $ 110 a few years ago.

   Also, antique dealers often have gorgeous old desks with solid wood tongue-and-groove construction and elegant glass door “barrister” bookcases and solid oak file cabinets, if he doesn’t mind vintage style.

   If you prefer retail stores, Pottery Barn, West Elm, Henredon, Ethan Allen, Drexel and Arhaus are all good places to search for.

   Don’t even think about super store, they sell cheap stuff. Not something you’re looking for.

   Also, check online stores – officefurniture.com, primeofficefurniture.com, everythingofficefurniture.com etc. There are really nice products there. Also, check out Amazon, there are always some good reviews there and you can see what buyers think of a praticular product.

   If it doesn’t have to be a new piece of furniture, try Craig List or ebay. Hope this helps.

   Offices need a clear work area, and that means providing adequate space for computer hardware and peripheral equipment, a spot for reference materials, file space and a location for frequently used supplies. It’s usually not possible to walk into your local office supply store and find a quality product that meets all your needs.

   That being said, I’d recommend looking into a custom builder. They will come to the space and figure out the best use of the area he has. Plus, they will be able to provide built-in solutions, such as built-in shelves, desks, cabinets, etc.

   Interior designers that often work for a professional woodworking company will take a number of things into mind that would otherwise be overlooked, such as: zoning, hardware & peripherals (hide those exposed computer cables), and room flow.
